Why I Chose Low Vision Care—and How I Help Patients See Every Day
After completing my optometry degree, I decided to pursue a residency in low vision rehabilitation. From the very beginning of my career, I’ve been passionate about helping people make the most of their vision—no matter the challenges they face. I truly believe that with the right resources, adaptations, and support, people can continue to lead full, independent lives even after experiencing vision loss.
At Munster Eye Care, I specialize in low vision evaluations and devices. My goal is to show each person that, while vision loss can be daunting, it does not have to mean giving up the things they love.
What Is Low Vision?
Low vision is a term that describes reduced eyesight due to an eye disease or condition. It can range from mild to severe, and it often makes daily tasks—like reading your mail, using the computer, or watching television—much more difficult. Many people don’t realize that “low vision” isn’t just about poor eyesight; it can include any decrease in your best-corrected vision in glasses or contacts, blind spots, reduced sharpness of colors, or loss of peripheral vision. In fact, you can have 20/20 vision and still experience symptoms that qualify as low vision.
What Happens During a Low Vision Evaluation?
When you come to see me for a low vision evaluation, my focus is on understanding exactly how your eyes function with your current level of vision loss. I dedicate 45 minutes to an hour for each evaluation, so we have plenty of time to talk about your daily challenges and try out different solutions together.
Here’s what I might recommend as part of your personalized plan:
- Adaptations to your current glasses—such as special tints, increased powers, or light sensitivity shades
- Low vision devices for near work—like hand-held magnifiers, hands-free near telescopes, or electronic magnifiers that can even read to you
- Devices for distance—to help with things like watching TV or spotting distant objects
- Visual field expansion tools—using mirrors or telescopes to help you spot-check your surroundings
- Artificial intelligence tools—to assist with reading, identifying objects, or managing daily tasks
Am I a Candidate for a Low Vision Evaluation?
If you’ve experienced any visual changes due to an eye disease, medical condition, or a sudden episode that resulted in permanent vision loss, you are a candidate for a low vision evaluation. I look at the quality of your vision as a whole, not just the numbers on an eye chart to better understand your level of vision loss.
What Makes a Low Vision Optometrist Different?
My residency in low vision rehabilitation gave me the specialized training to work with visually impaired and legally blind patients. I’m able to evaluate your remaining vision and recommend the most appropriate modifications or devices, always with the goal of helping you live as independently and confidently as possible.
What to Expect
My evaluations are thorough and completely personalized. We’ll spend time testing several devices and adaptations to find what truly works for you. My hope is that you leave my office with practical solutions that make a real difference in your daily life.
