A Peli Prism (often called a Peli Lens or Peli Lens System) is a vision aid used to expand the visual field of patients with visual field loss, especially those with homonymous hemianopia.
What Does a Peli Prism Do?
A Peli Prism is a special type of prism segment added to glasses. It works by shifting images from the non-seeing area into the seeing part of the visual field, helping the user become aware of objects they would otherwise miss (like cars or pedestrians on the blind side).
How Does It Work?
- Prisms bend light, so objects from the blind side are optically shifted into the intact visual field.
- Peli Prisms are typically installed as segments on the top and bottom of one lens.
- The brain gets “alerts” from the shifted images, helping with obstacle detection and navigation.
What Do They Look Like?
They are small transparent pieces added to the upper and lower portions of a lens on the same side as the field loss. They don’t obstruct central vision.
