What are some common symptoms of dry eye?
Excessive tearing, a scratchy or foreign body feeling, stinging or burning, red eyes, light sensitivity, and/or blurry vision.
Am I at risk for dry eye?
Anyone can get dry eye, but you might be more likely to have dry eye if you:
- Spend a lot of time on digital devices
- Are aged 50 or older
- Are female (fluctuating hormone levels, menopause, pregnancy, and while on birth control)
- Wear contact lenses
- Don’t get enough vitamin A (found in foods like carrots, broccoli, and liver) or Omega-3 Fatty Acids (found in fish, walnuts, and vegetable oils)
- Have certain autoimmune conditions such as lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, thyroid disease, or Sjogren’s syndrome. These conditions can lead to inflammation and damage to the tear glands, resulting in insufficient tear production.
What causes dry eye?
Glands above your eyes, called Meibomian glands, produce oil to help keep your tear film smooth and intact. Dry eye happens when your tears evaporate quickly, or not enough tears are produced. This could mean:
- Your glands are obstructed, or may not produce enough oil
- Your tear quality is low, disrupting the homeostasis of your tear film
