MYOPIA CONTROL/MANAGEMENT

What is Myopia?

Myopia, or nearsightedness, is blurred vision at the distance without glasses or contacts. The occurs as the eye grows too long.

This condition is becoming more prevalent in today’s society amongst the general population, especially children. The vast majority of nearsightedness progression occurs during childhood and onto adolescence.

Therefore, it is important to intervene at this time for best prognosis.

What is Myopia Control/Management?

Myopia control/management is the usage of specialty contact lenses or eye drops in children to prevent the progression of myopia or nearsightedness. This consists of a few follow up visits to monitor for any changes in prescription throughout the year.

Why does slowing down the progression of myopia matter?

The increased amount of myopia is directly related to increased risk of many eye conditions and diseases. Some of these include: glaucoma, early cataracts, retinal detachments, and myopic macular degeneration. By preventing the rate of myopic progression, the risk of eye conditions and diseases also decreases.

How does it work?

Myopia management works by preventing eye growth (axial elongation), meaning the amount of myopia remains stable. MiSight contact lenses have a specific lens design that works to prevent eye growth while still correcting myopia when worn during the day.
